History and Legend
Obsidian is formed when volcanic lava comes into contact with water, cooling the lava rapidly. This produces a smooth glassy texture occasionally containing small bubbles of air that are preserved down the layers during the cooling process.
These bubbles can produce fascinating effects such as the golden sheen, known as Sheen Obsidian, or a sheen of rainbow colors called Rainbow Obsidian. A snowflake pattern is formed when white clustered crystals are trapped in the black volcanic glass producing Snowflake Obsidian. In the Stone Age obsidian was used to make blades and weapons. It is one of the earliest known stones to be used for scrying – seeing into the future.
